Student Union of Savonia University of Applied Sciences (SAVOTTA)

The Student Union of Savonia University of Applied Sciences (SAVOTTA) is a non-political service and support organisation for all students in Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Savonia UAS). SAVOTTA is an autonomous, public corporation. It is founded by the law of the Universities of Applied Sciences. According to the law, the Student Union is part of the University of Applied Sciences and its mission is to act on behalf of the students and as their representative.

SAVOTTA offers a remarkable amount of local, regional and national benefits to its members. Currently the union has about 3100 members. It speaks up for students´ social and financial rights and represents students in matters of education, studies and student´s status. Our student union also co-ordinates and develops tutor activities at Savonia UAS.

SAVOTTA works in close co-operation with the administration of Savonia UAS and develops education together with the working groups Savonia. The union nominates representatives to the board of Savonia UAS, Board of Study Grants and other working groups.

SAVOTTA was first established 1996 as PSAKO ry. Student union was a registered organisation and the activities were based on the voluntary work of the students and optional co-operation between the students and Savonia. On August 1, 2005 a change in the polytechnic law was passed that required all polytechnics to have a student union. This way SAVOTTA became officially part of Savonia and it also became a public corporation in stead of the registered organisation. Responsibility grew but also the possibilities of influence.

The highest decision-making power in SAVOTTA lies in the hands of the body of 12 representatives. The members of the body are chosen by the students each year. Executive board uses the executive power and runs the operations of the student union. The chair person and 4-8 board members are chosen by the body of representatives. SAVOTTA has also few full-time and part-time employees.

SAVOTTA is a member of SAMOK (Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences). In SAMOK our local student union has influence on national matters and the members of the executive board have access to the seminars provided by SAMOK. SAMOK is also our mouthpiece to the state administration and national organisations.

Each and every student of Savonia can join the student union. SAVOTTA supervises and develops the interests of the students in Savonia, acts as a link and a channel of communication for its members and develops the conditions and contents of teaching and studying by for example making proposals and statements as well as participating in different working groups of Savonia. As a member of student union, you get a national student ID-card which entitles you to a number of discounts.
